Just Keep Swimmin’ Swimmin’ Swimmin’

So, I was chatting away on my computer, and then I looked over at my fish tank cuz I could feel eyes burning holes in my back. I looked over to see my fish practically half out of the water, frantically moving around to try to get my attention, not once taking their freaky eyes off of me. This has happened several times, so I knew what they wanted. Food.

I don’t understand why, perhaps it has something to do with their 3-4 second memory span. Perhaps they forget that I had already fed them earlier today, and perhaps they forgot that I feed them everyday so naturally more food was going to come tomorrow. It dawned on me then, that fish are selfish beings. When I thought about it some more I realized that most animals are selfish. Everytime my fish notice I am in the room, they will clamour to the part of the tank closest to me to get my attention to feed them, and once I’ve fed them, they gladly ignore me. Cats are the same. They will only remember home when they are hungry or want attention. The same goes for dogs, they will only remember you when they want food or want you to pet them or play with them and love them like there is no tomorrow.

I had a rabbit (who tragically died. Yes, it was painful.) who was surprisingly the only unselfish animal I have ever seen. He knew where his food was, waiting in his cage for whenever he was hungry. When I let him out he was thankful for the freedom and took advantage of it, happily exploring the area and coming back to me every now and then just to check if I was still there. Other times he would climb up on my lap and snuggle up to me, just to let ME know that he’s there. Me and Dusty had an understanding. I regret that my fish and I don’t. I regret that everytime I want to watch them swimming around with their bright colors reflecting in the light and the water, all i get to see is them squirming at the surface, bumping into each other like retards, behaving like I haven’t fed them in days.

They aren’t that bad though. Atleast they still add some color to the world. Wouldn’t you agree?

I agree with the way you described about the gold fishes and coincidentally i have a very similar fish tank to yours. But dont you find it cute when they come next to the tank to grab attention with their mouths shaking?
