Survivor of the Road to Hana

The other day we took a drive to the town of Hana, wanted to go check out the lava tube there. Picture a road on the side of an island cliff. If you looked at it from above it would look like someone had given a 3 year old a crayon to design the highway. It starts you out telling you that it’s going to be curvy roads for the next 30 miles, believe the sign…it’s NOT kidding!!The first 12 miles took us over an hour to drive, yes, 12 miles in 1 hour.Funny thing is that there are reminder signs along way to remind you that there are curvy roads ahead…really? What was that , that I was just on.

Back to the trip, I must be odd because I enjoy driving on that road. It’s kinda fun until a big huge truck comes the opposite direction on a road that is barely big enough for my car and I find myself hugging the wall side of the road. We finally got to the lava tubes, they were pretty cool. Especially the part that looked like cooled down melted chocolate, and yep…it was kinda brown too. After the lava tube we asked the lady what she’d recommend for a place to eat, because Hana is a very small place. Her suggestion was any of the roadside BBQ places (as in…if you see someone at the side of a road with a BBQ going stop and eat) then she told us the one just up the street was pretty good. So, that’s where we ate. Two guys just out with the BBQ cooking food and serving it up to anyone who stopped. This was not restaurant, or a café, it was literally 2 guys on the side of the road with a barbeque cooking for up. I admit…it was really good. Next we continued on back the way we came, and stopped at Black Sand Beach. It’s a very cool beach with….you guessed it…black sand. The sand is created when the lava breaks down. But it is pitch black, and the water is very blue…it’s beautiful. We played there for a while before heading back stopping at a few different waterfalls along the way. It was a really nice day, first time on the whole trip we all got along../amazing! The Road To Hana t-shirts you see are funny. One I saw said “No whining, no crying, no fighting, to bickering, no asking to turn around and go back….those are the rules”. Toooo funny!!!

I recommend this drive, but leave early in the morning because it’s an all day thing. Stop in Paia for food, and a little shopping. It s a cute little town and a the people there are very friendly and kind. It’s a very long drive and 2 places to stop and use the restroom….and one of them was horribly nasty. So be sure to go before you leave!! LOL…. But the trip is worth it, and if you go when the water is there the waterfalls are beautiful, be sure to stop and enjoy things! And as they say here in Maui “Hana Ho!!” which means “do it again!!” This was my second trip down the road to Hana…so I did it again and survived it twice!
