Life on Maui

So, last night I’m driving from Ma’alaea to Lahaina, Maui to see a show. This is a drive that can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 45 minutes…or more..depending on certain factors. Like who is in front of you and how many surfers are out along the way. Being from the mainland the slow paced life takes getting used to. I had a guy in front of me going less than half the speed limit. Hey..I had somewhere to go, things to do, places to be and people to see…he was slowin me down, and I admit I was getting annoyed. Then I see a car with a bumper sticker that says “Slow down, this isn’t the Mainland”. I sort of laugh at first…..then about 2 miles later I hit the area with all the surfers. Guess who was holding up traffic then…that’s right I was. Not bad though….just enough that someone from the Mainland was probably behind me getting as annoyed as I had been just about 10 minutes earlier. On a sunny day the water and the waves along the coast going to Lahaina are amazing. Watching the surfers is fun too, especially when one of them catches a really great wave and rides it for a long time.

Finally got to Lahaina, I really need to go back there. There are so many cool little shops to go into, and some really amazing art galleries. I was there to see a show called ‘Ulalena. Every review I saw compared it to a Cirque Du Soleil show. If you have ever been to a Cirque show…and come here and go to see ‘Ulalena…don’t expect a Cirque type show! It’s got a bit of the acrobatics in it like Cirque shows (yes, I’ve been to 2 of them), but it’s definately more about the Hawaiian history. LOL…there are also no subtitles, so unless you understand Hawaiian, you’re just going to have to appreciate the beauty of it all. Parts of it are really beautiful, and the rest is just fun to watch. Afterwards some of the performers were outside for you to have your picture taken with them, both some of the men and some of the women. I watched a group of 4 guys keep taking turns having their picture taken with the same woman from the show, it was amusing. I do recommend the show…just not for younger kids because they will get really bored. Time to run for now…..Aloha
